April 2, 2016

I made a quick trip over to Hoover Reservoir this morning and shot these little birds along the creek. The Cooper's hawk was outside our living room window. I took the shot not only through the glass but also the blind was down; all this considered I am pretty happy with the picture.
This little fellow is a northern flicker.

  1. Cool Cooper's Hawk! Yeah! Nice one. You can even see the shape of his spots! I bet if you add a bit more contrast it will help with the diffused light from the blind. You have a decent amount of detail for that, even expression in the eyes. I like this image.

  2. All of these are nice, Matt. I like Flickers too-a beautiful bird, especially the yellow underside of the wings. Have you put a feeder up? Even though the Flickers and the Mourning Doves don't approach the feeder, they seem to come in closer because the other birds are there, and will step in for a quick grab at the seeds that fall to the ground. I've had a few other birds come in during migration that I would never see otherwise, and I think they spot the activity near the feeder and want to see if there is anything for them.

    1. Thanks Adelle! I actually did doctor up the hawk with saturation and contrast; it was pretty bland and came out much better after some adjustment, I tried not to overdo it. I took the shots of the flicker and the woodies over at Hoover Reservoir below the dam along the creek.
